I did some experimenting with r&j family trees for a fic project I’ve been planning, and I decided to post the results just for the fun of it (with annotations!) I used the Italian translations’ names for the canon characters because I didn’t want them to stick out as much next to my ocs (also, there are some Italian spellings that I prefer over the English, like Mercuzio and Giulietta). If I didn’t explain the origins of a name, odds are it was chosen just because I liked the way it sounded

Capulet family tree

-the name “Giovanna” comes from da Porto’s version of Lady C
-Vittorio is named after Vittorio Matteucci aka Italian Musical Lord C
-Petruccio is a ghost character (who is given lines in some printings), and Antonio is Petruchio’s dad from The Taming of the Shrew (yes, I merged the two together)
-Valenzio is in reference to the guest list’s mention of “Signor Valentio and his cousin Tybalt”
-Bernardino is an Italianized version of Bernardo, the Tybalt-equivalent character in West Side Story
-Livia is Rosaline’s sister in my verse bc some printings mention “Rosaline and Livia” on the guest list
-Diana is in reference to Diana Capilet from All’s Well That Ends Well, whose name I’ve seen printed in some Italian versions as “Diana Capuleti.” (Yes I know All’s Well is set in Florence not Verona ssshh.)
-Violenta is a ghost character in All’s Well, who I’ve seen some people theorize is Diana’s sister (and others think “Violenta” was a rejected name for Helena)
-Adele is the name I’ve given to the Widow Capilet from All’s Well, who I merged with “the lady widow of Vitruvio.” The name comes from Lady C’s name in the opera I Capuleti e i Montecchi
-Martino’s name comes from the guest list’s mention of “Signor Martino and his wife and daughters”
-Yes, the implication here is meant to be that Giovanna and her brothers are distant Capulet cousins but she still married Vittorio because Middle Ages

Montague family tree

-Teodoro is an Italianization of Ted, Lord M's name in the 1996 movie
-Andrea and Marin(o) are Montagues/Monteses in Lope de Vega's Castelvines y Monteses, a Spanish version written a few years after Shakespeare's r&j
-The surname Monaldi comes from The Divine Comedy, where they are mentioned in the same passage as the Montecchi and Cappelletti
-Porzia is named after a character in The Merchant of Venice
-Isabella and Claudio are named after characters in Measure for Measure
-Yes I know there are two Antonios in my verse. It's intentional, in honor of how many there are in Shakespeare
-I promise there's an actual reason that Cassio is here and that he's a Montague just trust me on this one
-Adriana is named after a character from The Comedy of Errors

Escalus family tree

-I gave Prince Escalus the first name Bartolomeo, after Bartolomeo I della Scala, the historical figure he was based on (and, in at least one version, explicitly named as)
-I've seen Italian translations alternately use "della Scala" and "Escalo" for Escalus' translated name. I went with the non-historical name to allow myself more wiggle room for changing things
-Alberto, Cangrande, Constanza, Francesco, Cecchino, Bailardino, Caterina, and Niccolo are all named after real relatives of Bartolomeo I
-Mercutio’s (and Valentine’s) surname comes from his Luigi da Porto incarnation, who is named Marcuccio Guercio (sometimes spelled as “Guertio”).
-Paride/Paris' surname is also drawn from da Porto
-Cassandra is named after a character from The Odyssey
-I decided to keep things short by not mentioning all of Cangrande's many other illegitimate kids but trust me there were a lot of them
-For the same reason, I didn't include the names of Bartolomeo's mistresses (though if you're curious, Cecchino's mother is Angela Dente and Bailardino's mother is Gemma de Spinobexo)
