Everyone please applaud: I have fixed the Sonata Problem that has been plaguing me all week.

(It's not really a problem. It was fine before, just kind of an awkward transition where I cut out a deus-ex-machina bit of evidence that didn't work well. But it was going to Bother Me until I fixed it.)

yeah, I know it's 11:45 PM and I have work in the morning, what about it.

Entirely unexpected

YouTube decided that I might be interested in an obscure TV promotional clip that was broadcast shortly after the filming of "Twenty Years After" -- I was, but not least because the young man sitting in the background behind everyone else ("because he sings offstage", jokes Georgii Jungwald-Khil'kevich, a.k.a. the Unpronounceable Director -- Smekhov refers to him in his memoir simply as 'Khili' :-p) turned out, much to my surprise, to be a remarkably good-looking Igor Nadzhiev. I mean, he was striking enough that I'd actively been wondering who he was, since he definitely wasn't one of the actors in the picture. In fact he was the solo soundtrack singer, whose appearance I'm more familiar with from the covers to various individual tracks from the film, obviously released much later:

But by that point he has a fine voice but bears a disconcerting resemblance to Michael Jackson.

Apparently right at the beginning of his career, with shorter hair and several nose jobs earlier, he actually looked quite different...

Fandom 50 #23

Untitled Daisuke and Monty by Julia Stark
Fandom: Dimension 20: Cloudward, Ho!
Relationship: Daisuke Bucklesby/Monty LaMontgomery
Medium: Art
Length: 1 piece
Rating: SFW
My Bookmark Tags: slice of life, happy ending, established relationship, then and now, clothing, nostalgia

Description:
Two full-colour images of Daisuke and Monty, one in the present and one in flashback to their younger days. The first is fully saturated and features the two walking close together with Monty in the lead. Daisuke's hat is tipped forward over his eyes as he looks down with a faint smile and puts away his flask. Monty is watching him over his shoulder, likewise smiling and seemingly mid-conversation with him. Above them, larger and more faded out, is a memory of them sitting together decades ago, Daisuke speaking while Monty watches him with soft-eyed attention.

Very Minor Spoilers for Episode 6 )
This piece is just so sweet. The whole "getting the band back together" element of Cloudward, Ho! has been right up my alley, and I like that their separation was more about losing something that was holding them together rather than a big falling-out that created any ill will. It's made for a great story so far about some highly competent older characters reuniting warmly with old friends and working well together because of their shared history.

I love how the artist has captured this. The flashback looms large over the two men, creating a sense of those past conversations fuelling their present ease with each other and shared direction. It spot-on conveys Monty's wonderful attentiveness to people and suggests a lot in imagining the usually laconic Daisuke so engaged in talking to him. As someone who loves the aesthetics of this season, I'm also very much here for the details in their outfits and the little ways they've changed over the years.

- As of July 6th, I'd written more words this year than I had in all of 2024. Mostly this tells you how much 2024 sucked creatively, but also damn, that's a pretty good pace! I'm currently working on something for Summer of Horror and daydreaming about that Liam/Liam/Noel time travel fic that I may finally go back to working on.

- H/C Exchange finally went live! I got Re-Animator mpreg, which was DELIGHTFUL, and I wrote... something completely unexpected, literally on the day of the deadline after I finally gave up on all previous plans.

- I did end up signing up for Battleship. I'll participate for the eight days of it that happen before I leave for vacation. I also prompted a variety of forever OTPs (Liam/Noel) and rarepairs I haven't thought about in ages (Dawn/Illyria). Hopefully someone will be inspired.

- I picked up a couple of things in the summer Steam sale, and thus have done basically nothing the last 2-3 days but play Cult of the Lamb, the cutest little cosmic horror game you ever did see.

I was so out of it when I got up this morning that I turned on the wrong stove burner when I was trying to make tea and I got a bunch of smoke in my apt. that stupid smoke alarm goes off if I just turn the stove on to do anything more complicated than make tea or if I turn the oven on at all unless I open the window and turn the stove fan and box fan on full blast (and, yes, I cleaned the oven). It's a pain because I love to watch TV or listen to music when I cook and I can't do that anymore because the fans are very loud and I can't hear the TV or music at all well when they're on.
I think deviled eggs go great with barbecue ribs so I hard boiled some eggies and put them in the fridge and I will devil them later.

In late 2019, TV, movie, anime, gaming, celebrity, music, and book fans assembled to save Yahoo Groups after Verizon decided to shut down the mailing list service. Approximately 300,000 fandom groups have been saved. The Yahoo Gedden project is working on identifying the fandoms of Italian language mailing lists and can use your help. We need people who can read Italian natively right now to help us identify the Unknown groups. You can work at your own pace and it is a low time commitment. Work is done on Discord, just reading the Italian group description and a few messages and summarizing the messages in English, maybe answering a question of clarification ("is it talking about X or Y?"). No software or other tools needed besides your phone/computer and access to Discord.

Remember how I said the Wegovy has cut down on the impulse shopping noise in my brain? It still has, but when a bunch of things on my "to buy someday Real Soon Now" all have sales over the 4th of July weekend? Yeah, I spent a lot of money. But this means that a dress, jacket, pendant, and art book were less than they had been, so yay?

... and this will certainly keep me from buying ALL THE MERCH at the MCR concert. Yes, it will.

Challenge #2: Tunnel of Love
Journaling: The romance of summer! What do you love? Write about anything you feel sentimental about or that gets your heart pumping.

I've never been great at being sentimental about things - complicated depressing family history reasons that eventually added up to "I'm bad at openly expressing how much I love something". But I've been working on that, so tricky as it might be, I'm going to talk about something summer-associated that I love that I don't talk about much: hummingbirds.

They're so pretty. I've had a hummingbird feeder for years, and every spring they show up at my window to see where it is. In the summer, I'll sit out on the porch with a book and just hang out while the hummingbirds hold a tiny little territory war over the feeder. I'm sure it's all very serious and dramatic, if you're a hummingbird. If you're me, it's just adorable, and kind of noisy.

Two years ago I left the back door open, and a hummingbird decided to make herself at home in my apartment. This would be an adorable moment of "chosen by the birds", except that I also have a cat, so it was a very exciting twenty minutes of trying to very gently remove a small angry bird. Worth it, though. They're precious.

(Note to self: refill feeder tonight.)

No creative-prompt fill from me this challenge, because poetry and I have a very bad relationship. Alas! In apology, I found a picture of a hummingbird (not mine, I can't photograph birds that move that fast):

cut to spare my reading page )

On Sunday night I ordered pork spring rolls from my favorite place with the idea of having one for dinner, and one for lunch the following day. As I was taking the second bite of my dinner, the Stroppy One turned to me and said that it had way more garlic than usual. He was right, because as he was saying that, I noticed my mouth and lips were burning and felt like welts were rising. I got a refund from DoorDash, and gave the Madwoman in the Attic the second spring roll. Sooooo apparently I'm even more sensitive to garlic than I thought, and I'm really mad about it.

---

My Chemical Romance alert! There's a post on Tumblr that's about the runup to the show with details being constantly added. Apparently setup for the concert has already started, which is unusual. I wonder if that's why there's more time between concert dates; I'd assumed it was because the band finally learned they need to rest between shows, but maybe not. The band has been hinting on social media that these concerts are "so much more than just playing The Black Parade". Needless to say, the fandom has collectively been losing our minds.

(THE CONCERT IS THIS FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!!!)

Yes, looking forward to this concert is one of the few things helping me cling to sanity right now.

I'm just hanging around here until I have to go to physical therapy this afternoon, looking forward to going to skeptics in the pub tonight once I hear from Dave. My legs hurt too damn much to go swimming the other day. I wish my neighbors would shut up, they're yelling at eachother, I don't know what they're arguing about and it's none of my business anyway but one of them has a very annoying voice.

1. Brain raccoons in full force in the few days leading up to this trip. In part because I got my period and being in your 40s evidently means you just lose your mind for a few days every month. (This has been going in for like 6? months. Maybe more. I swear every god that knows my name I'm going mad. The internet says this is just what peri-menopause is and suck it up buttercup.)

1b. Brain raccoons are insisting that the new music player is inadequate because it only has a handful of albums and every mashup I could find on my various drives (600-ish). The raccoons say I need to bring my ipod that only holds charge for the length of a shower as well because my comfort playlists are on there.

My music collection is disorganized enough that I don't have the brain bandwidth to organize it and rebuild the comfort playlists on the new device before leaving. My brain bandwidth is taken up with other things

2. New fountain pen owner milestone: have completely taken apart and put back together two of my four TWSBI Ecos. One had the end cap come off during cleaning today and the other had water get in on the wrong side of the plunger. For personal future reference this is the video I used -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUPaXQpXOEY

2b. The TWSBI Eco is my current favorite fountain pen. Easy to fill, chunky enough for my hands, and the stub nib works nicely with my awful handwriting.

3. I am running into packing problems mostly because a third of my suitcase is taken up by the collapsible bag I'm bringing for souvenirs.

Had some orange blossom tea. I would have loved to get together with L. today but she was busy. Forwarded some SS threatening shit to my dad at his request and got a bracelet repaired by this super nice lady who works at one of the bookstores in my neighborhood (the jewelry stores were all closed, contrary to what it said on my cellphone). I heard today was world chocolate day so I went to my favorite cafe to get a piece of chocolate peanut butter roll cake but they stopped selling it. Booooooo! They didn't do the lemon cake anymore either, I know there's no chocolate in that but I really love that lemon cake too. Double boo! Ordered some new teas, one Yunan for me and one red chai for L. Talked to T. and confirmed that he will be picking me up Friday at 4:30 to go to the concert. I have been wanting to go to the movies lately but nothing seems to be playing around other than movies I already saw and wasn't that impressed with and the usual superhero bullshit. I heard there's something around called Fucktoys that sounded really interesting but it's not playing around here.
