rp headcanon rambling under the cut
ok so I just wanted to make a little post explaining how Mercutio’s Complicated History with the two main families of Verona works in my blog’s verse:
Mercutio used to be more True Neutral but was mostly friends with the Capulets because those guys are Social Climbers so they probably spent a lot of time hanging around the royal family trying to gain their favor (it never worked). As a result, Mercutio met and befriended some of the Capulet kids, and at some point along the line he began a casual sexual relationship with Tybalt which eventually developed into Real Feelings. HOWEVER, since these boys are both amazingly bad at dealing with their own emotions, they tried to pretend it wasn’t serious when they were around others. Also there’s the fact that they both have Anger Issues so the relationship was a lot more tempestuous than is healthy but Mercutio usually just brushed it off with a joke about make up sex because he didn’t want to confront the idea that he’d allowed himself to be hurt by the same person more than once.
Then came the death of Tybalt’s father, which in my version was caused by Benvolio’s dad because Drama (also in my version both of their dads died in the same battle because one of the Capulets stepped up to avenge him). Afterwards, Mercutio told Tybalt that he refused to stop being friends with Benvolio so Tybalt kicked him out and for a while that was the last time Mercutio ever came to the Capulet house. (Sometimes, for Dramatic Effect, I like to also add in the detail that Mercutio was naked when he was kicked out and refused to go back and get his clothes so he just walked home without them because for some reason I like to humiliate my characters as much as possible.)
A little while after this whole thing happened, Mercutio started hanging out with the Montagues full-time, which turned out to work a lot better for him because he ended up preferring the Montagues’ lack of pretension. Initially, he had a Huge Embarrassing Crush on Romeo that he never told anyone about, but since Romeo is straight Mercutio had to make peace with the fact that it was never going to work. He still has that attraction despite his attempts to bury it, and he can’t help feeling jealous when he hears Romeo talk about the girls he falls for. Meanwhile, Tybalt starts running into Mercutio with his new group of friends, especially Benvolio, which to him is the Ultimate Betrayal. Mercutio is feeling spiteful so he starts mock-flirting with Benvolio in front of Tybalt, but eventually he realizes that he actually does have Real Feelings for Benvolio. Fortunately, their relationship has gone a lot more smoothly than Mercutio had come to expect based on past experience. Mercutio has never told Benvolio about his feelings for Romeo, and probably never will, though sometimes he feels like Benvolio already knows and just doesn’t want to say anything about it.
